The anniversary celebrations were held on 14 October, National Education Day, at the headquarters on Rycerska Street. It was a good opportunity to present the institution’s achievements and the artistic talents of its students. And they have plenty of them – they dance, sing and recite poetry beautifully, and have even created a pretty good cabaret.
The anniversary celebrations were attended by president Tadeusz Krzakowski. “I am impressed by the effort put into preparing the young people for the concert,” the president said. “This anniversary shows how long a journey the institution has made. It has a special character both in the life of the city and within its educational and care system.”
The beginnings of special education in Legnica date back to 15 October 1949. That was when the First Public Special School was established, with Jerzy Gawroński as its head. It was located at 75 Złotoryjska Street. These were difficult, post-war times. Basic equipment and teaching aids were lacking. Over the years, the institution changed its name and headquarters many times. In 2006, the Special Educational and Care Centre in Legnica was renamed the Special Education Institutions Complex.
Today, the institution occupies three buildings: the main building at 13 Rycerska Street, housing three schools for students with mild intellectual disabilities; the building at 1–7 Piechoty Street, which houses a boarding facility and the Rehabilitation and Education Centre; and a wing of the school building at 9 Tatrzańska Street, housing three schools and a special kindergarten for students with moderate or severe intellectual disabilities.
The Special Education Institutions Complex serves children and young people with intellectual disabilities aged 3 to 25. Their development, education and care are provided by highly qualified staff. Thanks to the support of the city and other institutions, those in its care have excellent educational facilities.
