What is the result? – Henryk did it with great care – says former Legnica monument conservator Zdzisław Kurzeja. – At the same time, the restored work has retained all the qualities of the patina of time.

The famous Legnica wall composition has adorned the façade of the building at ul. św. Jana for decades (the corner of the Market Square, next to the library entrance). Henryk Baca, then a 27-year-old artist, created his mosaic featuring Copernicus as its central figure throughout the summer of 1973. That year was the Copernican Year. In its wake, the newly established Kopernik housing estate was named after the great astronomer, and schools were given his name. Thanks to that anniversary, the Market Square also gained an interesting ornament. However, 40 years passed, and the ceramic-and-glass mosaic was damaged in many places.

The artist, now in his later years, spent a number of weeks this summer restoring Copernicus to his rightful splendour. The Municipal Housing Management commissioned the mosaic’s restoration from its creator, who defeated three competitors in the tender. After the restoration work was completed, an artistic happening was held on 23 September. It was attended by students of the 5th General Secondary School, named after Hevelius, also a famous astronomer, Legnica residents, President Tadeusz Krzakowski, the media and representatives of ZGM.

– We take care of and look after works of art – said President Tadeusz Krzakowski. – They testify to the history and artistic and visual value of our city. We also refused to let the mosaic fall into disrepair. We have plans to illuminate it as well, bringing out additional qualities.

Henryk Baca was very pleased. – This time, I had the most trouble with the expansion-joint sealants, which I had to import from Germany – he joked. – But I assure you, no one will steal Copernicus’s crystal again. I attached it with the strongest cement. The artist revealed that he had prepared more than 100 kg of ceramics and glass for the restoration, which were used to fill the losses.

ZGM Director Janusz Hawryluk admitted that meeting Henryk Baca was a pleasant experience for him. Years ago, the artist had taught him art at secondary school. He did not reveal with what results. Gabriela Stelmach from the art class at the 5th General Secondary School pointed out that many people pass this mosaic every day. They may have grown accustomed to it. – However – she added – when, on a day like today, we stop for longer and look closely, we rediscover its beauty and richness.
