Delegations and flag-bearing representatives of several dozen Legnica educational institutions attended. Those present included MPs Małgorzata Sekuła-Szmajdzińska and Robert Kropiwnicki, representatives of the local authorities, including Mayor Tadeusz Krzakowski, Municipal Council Chair Jan Szynalski, and councillors.

For many years, the inauguration of the school year in Legnica has been an opportunity to give special recognition and honours to students at all school levels who excel in academic, artistic and sporting achievements. They become recipients of the Mayor’s scholarships. Tadeusz Krzakowski congratulated the students, their tutors, teachers and parents. He wished everyone a successful school year filled with achievement and joy.

A total of 76 students received one-off scholarships for academic achievements, while 18 received them for outstanding sporting results. Primary-school students were awarded PLN 400 each, lower-secondary students PLN 500 each, and upper-secondary students PLN 600 each. The mayor awarded nine talented Legnica students annual scholarships of PLN 200 per month from September 2014 to June 2015; these also serve as social assistance. The amount allocated to scholarships in the new school year is PLN 53,000.

In addition, three Legnica students became scholarship recipients of the Jerzy Szmajdziński Foundation this year.

The Mayor of Legnica’s wishes for the new school year

Dear students, respected educators and education-sector employees!

The beautiful, sunny holidays are already behind us. The time to acquire knowledge and learn is beginning—a time of intensive work for the entire educational community of students, teachers and parents. In our city, this is a huge community: nearly one in three Legnica residents is closely or directly connected with education.

Today, students at all educational levels hear the first school bell. For very many of them, it is the first time in their lives. They are the youngest—seven- and six-year-olds. I trust that school communities will welcome them as a family, surrounding them with care and concern.

I wish all Legnica students a successful school year—a joyful year full of success and achievements in every field that represents their youthful passions. May your interests develop ever more fully.

I wish the teaching staff, teachers and tutors a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment in their daily work with children and young people, as well as the fulfilment of their expectations in carrying out this exceptional social mission.

May life at school become a school of life for the entire community—in the most positive sense of these words.

Tadeusz Krzakowski
Mayor of Legnica
