The reconstruction of Podgórna and Zygmunta Augusta streets has been under way for two months (the tender result was announced on 7 April). Driving along both streets, where the asphalt has been stripped, is very difficult. There are potholes and sand, dust rises while driving, cars fall into holes carved out by machinery, and motorists cover this section at a speed of 15–20 kilometres per hour. During rush hour, traffic jams form in the town because drivers try to avoid the problematic stretch of road.

According to the information contained in the tender documents, the renovation was scheduled to be completed by the end of May. Why has it not been possible to quickly renovate a stretch less than 400 metres long? County Executive Dariusz Kwaśniewski has recently been promoting tourism and appearing prominently at an increasing number of events. Did he plan the street renovation in detail? It is not known. The fact remains that an important street in the town has been left in a state of disrepair. The spokeswoman, Katarzyna Biegasiewicz-Mularczyk, did not answer our questions yesterday. Instead, the county executive apologised on Facebook for the prolonged renovation and blamed the gas company. The street is reportedly to be repaired next week.

Drivers have been complaining about county roads for years. It seems they were a priority neither for former County Executive Przybylski nor for the new County Executive Kwaśniewski. We have written about this repeatedly: about residents of the Nowogrodziec municipality who protested against the pothole-ridden roads (as a sign of protest, they brought, among other things, a damaged wheel rim and a piece of asphalt to a county council session); about the scandalously long renovation of Staroszkolna Street; and repeatedly about sand left uncleared on county roads after winter.

Hello

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused by the prolonged renovation of Podgórna Street in Bolesławiec,” says Stanisław Chwojnicki, Deputy County Executive of Bolesławiec. “The renovation of this road was necessary; unfortunately, the additional replacement of the gas and water and sewage systems complicated and prolonged the entire project. A successful conclusion is imminent. In the first half of July, residents of Bolesławiec and our visitors will be able to use a new and safe road. Bolesławiec County allocated PLN 205,000 for the renovation of Podgórna Street.”

Dear Madam,

Thank you for the copy-and-paste from the note on the county website, but I am once again asking you to answer the questions: who at the county office is responsible for the renovation, and what did the county office do to speed up the delayed work?

Yours sincerely,
Krzysztof Gwizdała
