– The two-year-old remains in serious condition. After the injuries he suffered, his condition is unlikely to improve dramatically anytime soon. But we are seeing signs of improvement – says Tomasz Kozieł, spokesperson for the Regional Specialist Hospital in Legnica. He adds: – The surgeons who operated on him immediately after the incident did a truly excellent job.
The medical team at the district hospital in Bolesławiec admits that, for a moment, they considered sending the little patient to a specialist hospital. – The boy’s condition was such that he might have arrived there alive, but operating on him would have become extremely difficult – stresses Nikolaj Lambrinow, director of medical services. – With the benefit of hindsight, we can say with a clear conscience that taking care of the child here was crucial – adds Paweł Remiszewski, the surgeon who operated on the boy..
– It was a complex problem. Not only because he was a small patient – explains Krzysztof Mildner, the lead surgeon. – All the child’s organs are smaller, which requires greater precision during surgery.
– There is also the issue of the instruments, which are too large in such cases – explains Barbara Fraś, the operating-room nurse.
– It was also important to administer the right dose of anaesthetic. Operating on such small children is not an everyday occurrence for us – says Grzegorz Szociński, the anaesthesiologist.
What is more, the medical team at the Bolesławiec facility knew that the two-year-old’s operation could not go on indefinitely. The doctors constantly remembered that they still had to attend to his mother, who had been brought to the facility with lightly cut wrists and two abdominal wounds. She also required surgery.
Both the mother and the child are alive. This is primarily thanks to our doctors and paramedics. As the doctors stress, the latter behaved very professionally because they did not limit themselves merely to transporting the two patients. In reality, many people were involved in saving the little boy. – But this is a team sport – states Paweł Remiszewski.
The Bolesławiec ZOZ thanks its colleagues from Legnica for their help and support.
Let us recall: the tragedy took place on Tuesday, 1 April, in an apartment on Opitza Street. Before 3 p.m., Bolesławiec police officers received a report that two people had been brought to hospital – a 36-year-old mother and her two-year-old son. The woman had cut wrists and two abdominal wounds; the child had as many as five stab wounds to the abdomen and a forearm wound.
The 36-year-old has two children. One of them was at her grandmother’s, who lives in the neighboring apartment. At one point, the older woman came to her daughter’s apartment and noticed that her child and grandson were lying in blood. A neighbor who had once worked in an operating theatre rushed to help. Thanks to her composure, the injured people did not bleed to death before the ambulance arrived.
On 1 April, we reported that the 36-year-old had probably injured her son herself and tried to cut her own veins. As it turned out, the perpetrator of the tragedy confessed. She was charged with attempted murder and remanded in custody for three months. She faces up to life imprisonment. Moreover, the prosecutor’s office applied to the court to deprive the 36-year-old of her parental rights.
