The proposal for cooperation was submitted by the mayor of Acuto. The Italian municipalities share with Bolesławiec the figure of St. Maria de Mattias – the patron saint of Bolesławiec. The patron saint of Bolesławiec was born in Vallecorsa and spent the first years of her life there, then moved to Acuto, where she founded the Congregation of the Sisters Adorers of the Blood of Christ.

The Motherhouse of the Congregation operates in Acuto. Inspired by the Sisters Adorers of the Blood of Christ, the residents of Bolesławiec participated in large numbers in the canonization celebrations of St. Maria de Mattias. The delegation was led by the president of Bolesławiec Piotr Roman, who had the honor of presenting Maria de Mattias in the presence of John Paul II and crowds of the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square on May 18, 2003. Five years later, St. Maria de Mattias was proclaimed the patron saint of the city of Bolesławiec.

In August 2010, a Cooperation Agreement was signed between the city of Bolesławiec and the municipality of Vallecorsa. The successful development of cooperation between the two towns prompted the authorities of Acuto to propose establishing trilateral partnership cooperation between the towns united by St. Maria de Mattias.

The proposal for a trilateral partnership was accepted by the authorities of Vallecorsa, who expressed the conviction that it would increase the potential for cooperation and enable the joint efforts of the communities of the three towns to be combined in developing contacts.
