On 13 December 1967, a disastrous construction failure occurred in the village of Iwiny. At the Konrad mine, the embankment of a flotation-tailings reservoir ruptured. At 3:15, more than 12 million m³ of water and mud swept over the snow-covered village. Eighteen residents died in the disaster, including a family of five. Homes and farm buildings were destroyed.

The tragedy caused enormous material losses and led to the contamination of local arable fields and gardens. The scale of the destruction is shown in photographs that also reveal how powerless people are in the face of the forces of nature.
