Our library is not just a typical lending library, but also a cultural institution where a great deal takes place. Meetings with interesting people are held here, as are exhibitions by both local artists and those who have gained international recognition; there is a book discussion club for adults and children, “third-age” students learn how to use computers, and a multimedia centre has been organised in the youth department. I am impressed by the number of initiatives undertaken by the Director, Halina Majewska, her organisational skills, as well as the diligence and creativity of the staff, because without a well-coordinated team even the best boss would achieve little. Therefore, I congratulate you and wish you that the next season, which will begin after the holidays, will be as successful as the previous one.
A library is a place that is both commonplace and extraordinary. Commonplace because it is accessible to everyone. Anyone can enter, browse through the catalogue or the shelves and find something for themselves. And extraordinary because it is completely different from everything around us, since the world of books is a magical realm. It is not enough to be able to read with understanding to become a citizen of this world. You also need imagination, a flexible mind and time, because people who read a lot treat books as a way of spending time free from compulsory activities.
The women working at the C. K. Norwid Municipal Public Library in Bolesławiec stand out in these respects, making them competent advisers to readers. They can recommend good reading, encourage people to read, and also talk with a visitor about matters that concern them.
