Intensive demolition work is under way at the historic swimming pool on Zgorzelecka Street in Bolesławiec. The investment is being carried out as part of the project “Restoring the former function of the bathhouse at the historic swimming pool on Zgorzelecka Street”. The project received funding from the Regional Operational Programme for the Lower Silesian Voivodeship for 2007–2013. The funding amounts to PLN 6,605,784.69 and represents 70% of the project’s eligible expenditure; total expenditure is PLN 11,610,040.65.

The building is to undergo a range of structural alterations, primarily to install a lift for people with disabilities connecting the basement, ground floor, first floor and attic, involving the demolition of parts of the ceilings above the basement and ground floor. A number of demolitions will widen existing passages and doorways and create new passages in the building. The project provides for the demolition of the steps on the first floor and their replacement with a ramp, as well as the removal of the existing changing cubicles on the ground floor and first floor of the swimming pool hall.

The facility will also feature a shallower pool basin, with the installation of a new stainless-steel basin, upper-level overflow channels, water attractions and lighting. The ladders used to enter the water will be replaced with steps and a lift for people with disabilities. Three mini jacuzzi pools, including one brine pool, are planned for the swimming pool hall. The pool equipment will include hydromassage devices, water cannons and sprinklers. The wellness room will be equipped, among other things, with massage beds, baths and hydromassage devices. The cardio room is planned to include a treadmill, rowing machines, steppers, elliptical trainers and exercise benches. The historic swimming pool will also include, among other facilities, dry, steam and infrared saunas, a SPA capsule, a hypobaric walking cabin and a salt cave.

Conservation work includes, among other things, replacing the roof tiles over the pool section, restoring and conserving sections of the clinker facade cladding, cleaning and conserving the stone plinths, repairing damage to the surfaces of decorative dark-green tiles, and restoring other historic ceramic wall cladding.

The work will also include conservation of the skylight above the swimming pool hall: cleaning the glass surfaces and securing the structure. The balustrades from the demolished steps will be reused in the newly designed ones. The sandstone slabs and terracotta will be cleaned, impregnated and waterproofed. Construction work will also include replacing the roof covering along with insulation, installation work, finishing work, drying the damp basement walls, installing insulation, and reconstructing the floors, particularly in the area beneath the pool, adapting them to the requirements of the planned technology. Internal and external lighting is planned for the facility.

The work is being carried out by Skanska. On 13 May 2013, Bolesławiec mayor Piotr Roman and Dariusz Raczycki, director of the Projects Team at Skanska, signed an agreement to carry out the project.
