“Our school is celebrating the National Day of Remembrance of the Cursed Soldiers for the second time,” says Barbara Sykulska, a history teacher at the Janusz Korczak II LO in Bolesławiec. “The Cursed Soldiers were persecuted by the communist authorities. They went underground because they did not accept Poland’s loss of sovereignty. Some of them were brutally murdered in prisons, without trials. Others were subjected to show trials during the Stalinist era, which also ended in death sentences.

On March 5, an assembly dedicated to the Cursed Soldiers was held in the school’s auditorium (it was led by: Justyna Szewczyk and Kacper Jędrzejewski). Throughout the month, information about soldiers of the anti-communist underground will be presented during homeroom classes at II LO. In addition, a knowledge competition about them will soon be held, as well as a communists–opposition debate.

Students from classes III b, I a, I b and I d, who are passionate about history, are involved in the project. “Poland regained independence in 1989. However, it was necessary to continue fighting for the memory of the Cursed Soldiers for many more years,” says Martyna Mularczyk, the project’s chief coordinator. “The establishment of March 1 as the National Day of Remembrance symbolically restored the honor they deserved.
