In Poland, around 13,000 people develop colorectal cancer every year. For many, it is already too late to save them. Treatment outcomes in Poland are among the worst in Europe.

The absence of symptoms does not mean the absence of disease. Colorectal cancer causes no symptoms in its early stages. There are no ailments, and nothing alarming is noticed. Nevertheless, when detected at an early stage, the disease can be completely cured in 90% of cases.

How can you protect yourself against colorectal cancer?

An examination of the large intestine makes it possible to detect precancerous lesions and remove them during the same procedure. As part of the screening programme, an endoscopic examination of the large intestine (colonoscopy) is performed free of charge:

  • in healthy people between 50 and 65 years of age, without significant symptoms of colorectal disease, regardless of place of residence or type of health insurance (only a PESEL number is required)
  • in people with a family history of colorectal cancer, the examination can be performed from 40 to 65 years of age
  • in people aged 25–65 from families with HNPCC (hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer).

People who are not eligible for the examination are those who have undergone a colonoscopy within the last 10 years.

Free examinations will be carried out at the Endoscopy Unit of the Independent Public Healthcare Institution in Bolesławiec, at 4 Jeleniogórska Street.

Information and registration for the examination:

  • in person: Monday to Friday, 12:00–14:00
  • by telephone: 75 738 02 94

The referral for the examination is a questionnaire available at the Endoscopy Unit (ground floor of the hospital's main building), completed by people willing to undergo a colonoscopy.
