The flower beds in the city’s Planty are neglected. Grass grows on them and is mowed rarely, so the lawns look unattractive. The grass is full of weeds. Until recently, dandelions were blooming in the flower beds... Planted two years ago, the plants are drying out and deteriorating. The flower beds are generally sparse and almost devoid of flowers. Any respectable housewife with a home garden creates better floral arrangements than the officials in the Planty.
Who is responsible for the neglected Planty? There is no point even asking. The city spokesperson will respond with official “blah, blah” and it will turn out that, formally speaking, everything is in perfect order. After all, last year the officials received an award, among other things for the Planty. Bolesławiec won the competition organized by the Society of Polish Urban Planners for the best-developed public space in Poland.

The project was intended, among other things, to improve the appeal and image of this most representative and most frequently visited part of the city. The scope of work included modernizing the Planty’s lighting and illuminating the greenery, restoring the vegetation, modernizing the Planty’s pedestrian paths, introducing bicycle routes, modernizing and replacing retaining walls and steps in the Planty, and illuminating existing structures and defensive walls. The walls were cleaned, their damaged areas were repaired, and they were treated with a water-repellent coating. In addition, the fountain on Bankowa Street was renovated. A total of 97,000 plants were planted in the Planty and the Market Square, including 140 deciduous trees and 25 conifers. The total value of the project was PLN 7,877,200.
The revitalization project succeeded; it is just that the flower beds became overgrown with weeds. Once the award is safely in hand, the election has been won, and there is plenty of time until the next one, who would bother looking after the plants? New, pretty ones will be planted before the next election, just like in Versailles. And once again, the residents’ eyes will be diverted.
