On Monday, an indictment against the former head of department at the Hospital for the Nervously and Mentally Ill was filed with the District Court in Bolesławiec. The Jelenia Góra prosecutor’s office charged him with accepting seven bribes from various people and a laptop from a pharmaceutical company, in exchange for promising to prescribe patients a drug manufactured by that company.
Mariusz Ch. was arrested in July last year by officers from the special anti-corruption unit of the Provincial Police Headquarters, immediately after he accepted a bribe from an officer posing as a patient.
The doctor spent six months in pre-trial detention. In January, he was released on bail set at PLN 60,000.
Mariusz Ch. is not the only doctor from Bolesławiec involved in the bribery scandal. In December last year, the director of the Hospital for the Nervously and Mentally Ill was dismissed. The Wrocław prosecutor’s office is conducting an investigation into his case. According to the office, the director may have accepted at least PLN 30,000 in bribes since 2000.
