The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate published a public warning concerning the withdrawal from sale of one batch of Carrefour Sensation hummus. The reason for the decision is the detection of gluten not declared on the label at a level exceeding 80 mg/kg.

The product poses no risk to most consumers; however, people with celiac disease, gluten intolerance or a gluten allergy should not consume it. As GIS emphasizes, consumption of the product by people with an allergy may cause an allergic reaction or other adverse health effects.

Which hummus has been withdrawn?

The announcement concerns the following product:

  • Name: Carrefour Sensation Vegetal Hummus with sea salt, 190 g
  • Batch number: 04 009 2
  • Best-before date: 31.01.2028
  • Manufacturer: Greek Trade Sp. z o.o.
  • Distributor: Carrefour Polska Sp. z o.o.

If you have a product with the indicated batch number and cannot consume gluten, you should not consume it.

Why was the product withdrawn?

According to information provided by the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate, gluten was detected in the product but was not declared on the label. This means that people buying the hummus may not have been aware of the presence of the allergen.

It was precisely the lack of adequate information about the ingredient, rather than the presence of gluten itself, that prompted the procedure to withdraw the product from the market.

What action has been taken?

The manufacturer decided to withdraw the indicated batch from the market and implemented corrective and preventive measures to reduce the risk of similar cases occurring in the future.

Carrefour announced that it had launched a procedure to withdraw the product from stores and blocked its further distribution from central warehouses. Products covered by the withdrawal were sent for destruction, while information about the action appeared on the chain's website, in stores and at customer service points.

GIS appeals to consumers

The State Sanitary Inspection is monitoring the withdrawal of the product and conducting an investigation.

GIS recommends that people with gluten intolerance, celiac disease or a gluten allergy do not consume hummus from the batch marked with number 04 009 2. If the product is still at home, it is advisable to check the markings on the packaging and follow the distributor's announcement regarding the return or withdrawal of the goods.
