Police officers from Bolesławiec are warning about another method used by criminals who exploit a sense of danger to take over funds from bank accounts. A resident of Bolesławiec County fell victim to this scheme.

First, she was contacted by a person claiming to be an employee of a mobile network operator. The caller, speaking with a distinct Eastern European accent, asked whether the woman had ordered a transfer or tried to withdraw money in Warsaw. When she denied it, she was told that someone was trying to defraud her and that the case would be handled by the alleged “bank cybersecurity department.”

After a while, a man calling himself a specialist phoned her. He also spoke with an Eastern European accent. He persuaded the woman to install an application enabling remote access to the device, and then instructed her to log in to mobile banking and follow further instructions. Believing that she was securing her funds, the woman provided SMS authorization codes. As a result, the scammers closed her term deposit and transferred all the money to other accounts.

Remember:

  • A bank will never ask you to install additional applications or share access to your device through external programs.
  • Never give anyone SMS codes, logins or online banking passwords.
  • Do not make decisions under time pressure—this is a common manipulation technique used by scammers.
  • If you have any suspicions, end the conversation immediately, contact your bank and report the matter to the Police.

Be prudent and exercise limited trust toward unknown callers.
