2 May 2026 at the Piast Gate, Bolesławiec President Piotr Roman together with the artist’s granddaughter Agnieszka Kupracz, and family members – Katarzyna and Mieszek Kutyniak – ceremonially unveiled a commemorative plaque dedicated to Mieczysław Żołądź, created by Bolesławiec ceramic artist Andrzej Pachom.

Mieczysław Żołądź was a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, ceramic artist and metalworker, as well as a heritage conservator and cultural animator. His work grew out of a deep fascination with the history, architecture and nature of Lower Silesia.

He came to Bolesławiec in 1954 and lived and worked there until his death in 1996, with a nine-year break connected with his stay at nearby Grodziec Castle, where he served as castellan.

He left behind numerous artistic works – graphics, reliefs, murals, stained-glass windows and interior designs – which to this day remain an important element of the region’s identity.

Among other things, he designed the interior of Bolesławiec’s Wedding Palace, monumental depictions of old seals adorning the Piast Gate, as well as acclaimed series of prints documenting the beauty of Bolesławiec and other nearby towns.
