A Civic Coalition councillor is still fighting for a Women’s Council attached to the mayor’s office. In December, she presented a letter she had received from the Department for Equal Treatment at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister.

“To be honest, I do not understand our local leaders, who do not want to establish a Women’s Council, even though such a body benefits the entire community,” says Urszula Magryś. “The European Union clearly emphasizes the importance of women’s participation in local public life, and having such a council makes it easier for local governments and non-governmental organizations to receive grants for civic, social and equality initiatives,” the councillor adds, presenting the response she received from the Department for Equal Treatment at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister.

The councillor does not understand, but the mayor clearly explained to her why he will not establish what he sees as an opposition Women’s Council.

“Let me remind you how the City Council was formed (after the 2024 local elections – editor’s note),” Piotr Roman said at a session in May. “My proposal was that we should create a certain mechanism together, but unfortunately one side rejected it, and it was not you, because you did not participate in those talks; it was the representatives who did not agree to such a solution. So we are operating according to the old model. There is someone who governs, and there is the opposition.” “It could have been built differently,” Piotr Roman added.

Piotr Roman not only clearly explained why he will never establish this particular council. He also showed which councils he favors and which he does not. He assessed the former Sports Council negatively, saying that it fell apart because each member fought for “their own piece of the quilt” and there was no concern for the common good.

Let us recall. The council operated from October 2009, and its members included clubs such as: MUAY THAI, “ILYO”, “Kolonia”, Ognisko TKKF Bolesławianka, the Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre, “Bolesłavia”, “TOP” Bolesławiec and “Bobrzanie”.

The mayor, however, praised the Seniors’ Council. Its chairman is Marek Małowiecki from the Association of Retired and Pensioned Former Employees of KGHM “Polska Miedź” SA, Bolesławiec Branch. KGHM, which probably has nothing to do with this praise or the council itself, sponsors city events under the mayor’s patronage, including the most important one: the Bolesławiec Ceramic Festival. The deputy chairwoman of the Seniors’ Council is Grażyna Witczak, head of the University of the Third Age in Bolesławiec, whose management has wholeheartedly and vocally supported, does support and will support Mayor Piotr Roman, particularly demonstrating this during the election campaign.

Therefore, Piotr Roman’s refusal to establish a Women’s Council is not surprising. What is surprising is the Civic Coalition councillors’ blindness to the fact that the mayor will never do anything for them because they did not join a broad coalition and did not reach a political agreement like Dawid Sarbak of Law and Justice and Maciej Małkowski of Impuls Lokalny. It is that simple and clear.
