This is a choice between practicality and security, between speed and durability. More and more Poles are discovering that carports are not necessarily the worse option. Quick construction, lower costs and minimal formalities are arguments that persuade many people. But does this mean that the traditional garage has become a thing of the past? Let’s find out!
Carport: why more and more people are choosing it
A carport is like an umbrella for your car. A simple idea that works better than you might think. Its greatest advantage is natural ventilation. Your car can breathe, which means no problems with moisture. A closed garage without good ventilation? That is a straightforward path to corrosion.
The everyday benefits are obvious:
-
Quick access. You do not have to fiddle with a gate remote at six in the morning. You get in and drive away.
-
Versatility. A carport is not just a place for a car. It is a covered workshop, a place for a barbecue and shelter from the rain.
-
Lightning-fast installation. A ready-made carport? At most 2–3 weeks from ordering to use. A garage? Prepare for a few months.
-
Less paperwork. Often, you do not need permits or notifications. A carport of up to 50 m² on a plot with a house? You can build it without asking officials.
A carport is a choice for people who value convenience and functionality.
Enclosed garage: when is it irreplaceable?
A garage is a fortress. If you drive a new Toyota, Audi or BMW, it may not be worth taking the risk. The theft figures are clear. In 2023, these brands were among those most commonly stolen in Warsaw alone. Your gleaming SUV in an open carport? That is like leaving your wallet on a park bench. But there is no need to exaggerate either. Much depends on the area where you live.
A garage has its strengths:
-
Security. A thief has to work hard to get to your car. Most will give up.
-
Full protection. Hail the size of ping-pong balls? No problem for a garage. A carport? Your bodywork may suffer in such a confrontation.
-
Privacy. No one can see what you have inside.
-
Storage. Tyres, tools and bicycles: everything safely tucked away.
The problem with a garage? Depending on the design, it can cost as much as a small house. If it is larger than 70 m², you also have officials and permits to deal with.
The money tells the truth
A carport costs PLN 11,000–40,000 for a ready-made solution. A garage? Prices start at PLN 50,000, with no upper limit. But beware: the devil is in the details. Hidden carport costs include wood maintenance. Every few years, you need to impregnate and paint it. That costs PLN 200–500 each time. A brick garage practically requires no maintenance. Construction time is another story. A carport: a weekend with friends and it is ready. A garage: half a year of your life with concrete and dust. Unless, of course, you buy a wooden one from a ready-made design. Then things are much simpler!
How do you choose? Ask yourself these questions
There is no universal answer. Everything depends on your situation:
-
What kind of car do you have? An old Skoda or a new BMW? The risk of theft changes everything.
-
Where do you live? A quiet village or the city centre? Theft statistics do not lie.
-
How much money do you have? Be honest. Taking out a loan for a garage may not make sense.
-
What do you need? Protection from the rain alone, or complete security?
-
How much space do you have? A carport takes up less space and is less visually overwhelming.
A compromise for the smart
The best strategy may be a phased approach. Start with a carport, then, when you have more money, add walls and a gate. Just remember that legally, it will already be a new structure. You will have to complete the formalities again.
The truth is that most people need a carport but dream of a garage. If your car is not particularly attractive to thieves and you do not live in central Warsaw, a carport will be perfectly adequate. If, however, you have something valuable and do not want to worry, a garage is an investment in a good night’s sleep.
