Agate Summer is slowly recovering after two blows: a two-year absence from the map of Lower Silesian events due to the pandemic and the organization of a competing event in Lubań called the Sudetes Mineral Festival, which took place a week ago and is modeled on the event in Lwówek.
This year, the Genoa low is not treating the organizers kindly. Outdoor events lose a great deal when it rains and the weather is cold.
The event’s name is connected with the occurrence of agates of high collectible value in the Lwówek area (Płóczki Górne). Initially, from 1982 onward, the town hosted the Street Theater Festival, which preceded Lwówek Agate Summer.
The first edition of this festival, organized in 1998, focused mainly on cultural events, particularly outdoor theater performances, as well as a small mineral fair.
Since its fourth edition, Lwówek Agate Summer has undergone a transformation, focusing on mineralogical and geological themes, while the mineral fair became its central feature. Symposia, geological workshops and numerous themed exhibitions were added to the program.
Today, in addition to the fair, demonstrations of cutting and polishing ornamental stones and a reconstruction of an agate mine are presented. Alongside the geological events, Agate Summer also includes concerts, a fair and sporting events.
