The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 2. The boy went with his grandmother to the new water park in Bolesławiec. While swimming in the pool, he caught his leg on the underside of the metal staircase structure. Unfortunately, the part—the edge—that the 9-year-old caught on was sharp and cut his leg.
The wound, more than 4 centimetres long, began to bleed. The pool lifeguard reacted quickly and, seeing the boy’s suffering and tears, drove him to the Emergency Department of the Bolesławiec hospital himself. The wound was stitched there.
According to the 9-year-old’s father, the sharp part of the stairs on which his son cut his leg was not covered in any way. In his opinion, this element should have been secured somehow—either bent or fitted with a plastic cover. Otherwise, an accident with even more serious consequences could occur.
The fortunate aspect of this unfortunate incident was that the sharp element did not sever the Achilles tendon. Nevertheless, the boy suffered serious injuries and has been limping and experiencing pain since the incident. Biuro Ronin—Zbigniew Zawada is handling the compensation claim for the injured child.
We asked the Miejski Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji w Bolesławcu for comment on the matter. This is the response we received:
The situation described in your inquiry did take place. Immediately after the incident, the staff provided the boy with first aid.
At the same time, we would like to emphasise that the safety of the facility’s users is our highest priority.
Therefore:
- the site of the incident was secured immediately,
- a technical inspection of the staircase structure and the remaining infrastructure elements was carried out,
- remedial measures were taken to eliminate the potential hazard.
The structure has now been secured in a way that eliminates the risk of similar situations occurring in the future.
