During his visit to Bolesławiec, Robert Kropiwnicki, a Member of Parliament representing the Civic Coalition, sparked controversy with a remark concerning the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas. The politician commented while pointing to an election banner for a candidate supported by one of the parties:
“A beautiful basilica, a very charming church, although so disfigured, like many churches today”
Many people understood these words as suggesting that the parish priest might have had something to do with putting up the banner. However, it quickly turned out that the MP had made a serious mistake. The land on which the banner stands belongs to the city, and renting space for advertising is available to anyone who decides to put up a structure and hang a banner.
Father Bogusław Wolański, parish priest of the Parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas, pointed out that the parish has no influence over who rents the space or for what purposes. No political activity is conducted in the parish, and the priest does not call on anyone to support any candidates.
Many residents of Bolesławiec accuse Kropiwnicki of a lack of tact and of making a fool of himself.
