Reader Łukasz Szuchalski sent us photos from yesterday. This is what Earth’s natural satellite looked like then.

Karol Wójcicki, a night-sky enthusiast, popularizer of astronomy, science journalist, television presenter and creator of Poland’s largest astronomy profile “Z głową w gwiazdach”, wrote yesterday:

Today, the sky has a real gem in store for us: a very young, slender crescent Moon—the most beautiful one that can be seen throughout the entire year. Many hardcore observers were already hunting for it yesterday, but today absolutely everyone will see it!

Why today in particular? Well, in spring, just after sunset, the ecliptic—that is, an invisible line near which the Sun, Moon and planets travel across the sky—stands very steeply relative to the horizon. As a result, the young Moon rises high above the western horizon and remains visible long after dusk.
