We have until 30 April to file our annual tax return. Some people rely on the automatic submission of their PIT return through the government application, but forget that automatic acceptance does not mean it is error-free. Nor does it mean that the return will contain all the information that matters to us.

– Automatic acceptance of the submitted tax return ensures that it is filed on time. However, it does not mean that our return is free of errors or is the most advantageous for us. The tax return submitted automatically will not include most tax reliefs; for example, it will not include the deduction for thermal modernisation relief or for blood donors. We must remember that the tax authorities do not know our situation in detail and do not respond instantly to certain changes, such as the arrival of a newborn child – notes Monika Piątkowska, a tax adviser at e-pity.pl.

Even if all the important information is included in the automatically prepared return, it is worth verifying it. Errors may result from a mistake when completing the PIT-11 form or from incorrect amounts reported when applying tax reliefs. The reliefs for seniors, families with four or more children, young people and those returning to Poland are fairly difficult to calculate, and applying them requires particular attention from the taxpayer.

Married couples who want to file jointly should also remain vigilant

– Such couples must bear in mind that Twój e-pit will automatically prepare and accept separate returns for each person. Therefore, if a couple wants to file jointly, they cannot rely on this automatic submission. They must prepare and send the return themselves. Let us remember that filing jointly with a spouse allows many families to optimise their annual tax return and receive a tax refund – Monika Piątkowska points out.

Verifying your PIT is in every taxpayer’s interest. It takes a moment and can bring considerable benefits. – Automatic acceptance in Twój e-pit should be a safety net for those who forget, not the standard way of filing for most taxpayers – warns Monika Piątkowska.
