In mid-March 2025, the bishops established the Working Group for Parish Catechesis. Its chairman was appointed as Artur Ważny, Bishop of Sosnowiec. The bishop announced that from September 2026, catechesis in parishes would be organised for children, young people and adults.
“The changes in the organisation of religious education lessons at schools, which, as many legal authorities assess, are being implemented contrary to applicable law, provided a certain impetus for our work,” Bishop Artur Ważny told PAP. “We had previously undertaken various efforts related to the need to renew and give a new shape to parish catechesis, but now they have accelerated significantly,” the bishop added.
Until now, such catechesis was held in connection with preparing parents and godparents for their children’s baptism, children for receiving First Holy Communion, and young people for the sacrament of confirmation. From 1 September 2025, under the regulation of the Minister of Education, the number of ethics and religious education lessons is to be one hour per week.
