The Weather Kids campaign is part of UNDP efforts to inspire public discussion and mobilize climate action on the road to the COP30 climate negotiations, which will take place in Brazil in 2025. COP30 will mark the tenth anniversary of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement and represents a key opportunity to put the world on a path consistent with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as countries present a new round of climate actions and targets they plan to undertake. These plans—known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs; Nationally Determined Contributions to Emissions Reduction)—are at the very heart of the global fight against climate change.

Celeste Saulo, WMO Secretary-General: “The climate crisis is a key challenge facing humanity and is closely linked to the inequality crisis. 2023 was by far the warmest year on record, as were the previous nine years. Extreme weather events are intensifying and having enormous socioeconomic impacts. These include heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires and intense tropical cyclones. Ocean warming and sea-level rise are accelerating. Sea ice is melting, and we face the loss of glaciers that are so important to our precious water resources and ecosystems. Meteorological and hydrological services and scientists around the world are sounding the alarm and stepping up efforts to meet the challenge. Our decisions today will shape the future of many generations. This campaign is a call for urgent action for the benefit of people and the planet.”
