Prof. Marek Konopczyński, a pedagogue and member of the Committee of Pedagogical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, said in an interview with RP.pl published on January 7 that he is opposed to education authorities and local-government bodies taking part in the selection of school principals.
“This decision should belong exclusively to students, teachers and parents. The authorities should only check whether a candidate may hold such a position for legal reasons—for example, whether they have a criminal record. If the school community elected its principal, we could speak of depoliticizing schools.”

Konopczyński also believes that the practice of education authorities monitoring schools should be curtailed. According to the professor, local-government pedagogical supervision over educational institutions is sufficient, while education authorities could only support and train local governments in this area of supervision.
