The fatal incident occurred on 28 December, before 6:00 p.m. According to the police's preliminary findings, a 26-year-old man driving a Volkswagen passenger car from Obora towards Szklary Górne (Lubin County) collided with cyclists travelling in the same direction. As a result of the incident, a 48-year-old resident of Polkowice County died at the scene, while his 15-year-old son was taken to hospital.
The driver was not injured. He was sober at the time of the accident, but an initial test for drugs in the 26-year-old's system indicated that he was under the influence of intoxicants. His blood was therefore taken for laboratory testing. The man was arrested and placed in a police cell.
For several hours, under the supervision of a prosecutor, officers from the Lubin County Police Headquarters worked at the scene together with an expert in road accident reconstruction. Investigators will now thoroughly clarify the causes and circumstances of the incident, as well as whether the cyclists were properly lit.
Officers are appealing to all road users to exercise particular caution and drive responsibly. Above all, our safety depends on us.
Let us also remember that visibility is one of the basic conditions of safety. We therefore appeal to pedestrians and cyclists to wear reflective vests and other reflective elements, or carry a flashlight when travelling on the roads. Such behaviour will certainly improve our safety and may save our lives.
