In an interview with Piotr Kraśko on Fakty on October 11, during prime time, Sławomir Mentzen presented himself as a defender of gay rights, an opponent of antisemitism in Poland and a supporter of the European Union. And only a lack of time prevented him from presenting himself as a defender of women’s rights.
The party of Janusz Korwin-Mikke, now led by Mentzen, built its political potential over the years on the misogyny of its main leader, antisemitism, xenophobia and homophobia. What happened that made Sławomir Mentzen call a TVN report featuring statements by his Confederation colleagues “a libel worthy of TVP”? That is a puzzle for minds more substantial than a woman’s (that’s irony—editor’s note).
“I have repeatedly said that it is in Poland’s interest to remain in the European Union,” Sławomir Mentzen replied to the TVN journalist’s question. “I am a great supporter of the free movement of capital, goods and people. If a referendum were held at this moment—which I do not support and am not in favor of—I would not support Poland leaving the European Union,” added the Confederation politician known for the “Mentzen Five.”
He also strongly disagreed with statements by another Confederation candidate, Konrad Niżnik, namely: “There is no such thing as Polish Jews; no Jew has ever thought like a Pole. The only thing you have made your mark on in world history is the killing of Jesus Christ.”, or Tomasz Stala, number one in Częstochowa, namely: “Saying that you don’t want Jews and gays is the same as saying that I don’t want tomato soup.”.
And he considered the statement by Witold Tumanowicz, “After coming to power, we will register queers so that they cannot have children or work as teachers,” to have been taken out of context.
However, the way Mentzen emphasized caring for the well-being of gays in the Confederation program cannot be forgotten! It can only be quoted:
There is not a single, even the smallest idea in our program to restrict the rights of women or gays; there is nothing like that in our program. I will say more: the only proposal I have related to homosexuals is to abolish inheritance and gift tax, because at the moment this tax is paid mainly by gays, since families are exempt from it; that is my only proposal in this matter. What does it mean? It means that I want to increase the rights of gays; in no way do I want to reduce them.
