Everything seems very simple: we build a house and connect it to the sewer system—but what if that is not possible? Eko House has an alternative.
The Eko House company has already delivered its domestic biological wastewater treatment plants to more than five thousand users throughout Poland, as well as to Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
What is behind such great interest?
This is because we are increasingly moving to the countryside, including areas without sewer systems. More and more people who already have traditional septic tanks are choosing to build their own domestic wastewater treatment plant. This is because the cost of removing liquid waste continues to rise. They choose solutions that allow treated wastewater to be discharged directly into surface waters (e.g. a watercourse or ditch), dispersed into the ground (drainage or a soakaway well), or stored in a sealed tank (for watering ornamental plants). This is possible because Eko House products stand out on our market not only for their technological effectiveness and compactness, but—most importantly—for being odourless!
The technology based on wastewater aeration means that it does not produce unpleasant odours. If we want our treatment plant not to emit unpleasant smells, we should choose VH technology. If we choose a treatment plant with a primary settling tank, where anaerobic (putrefactive) processes take place, it will produce an unpleasant odour. The same processes occur there as in a traditional septic tank. Therefore, anyone who wants to replace their septic tank with something that will not offend the nose should choose a domestic biological treatment plant without a primary settling tank, such as those offered by Eko House.
In such treatment plants, activated sludge forms—a small ecosystem in which bacteria and living organisms feed on wastewater discharged from the household. The entire process takes place under aerobic conditions, which is why the treatment plant is equipped with a compressor that forces air into the bioreactor through diffusers. Large municipal treatment plants operate on a similar principle.
The unique VH technology means that treatment plant users do not have to add another dose of bacteria every week. In VH Premium and VH Light treatment plants, the bacteria are added right at the beginning (the company provides the customer with a starter pack). Interestingly, the continuous aeration of wastewater creates an environment in the bioreactor in which activated sludge forms naturally. This means that even without inoculating the bacteria, we can cultivate them in our treatment plant. This process takes time, and inoculating the bacteria at the very beginning means that the user does not have to wait long for the unit to start operating at full capacity.
Does it sound complicated? Eko House has installers throughout Poland, but it does not limit customers to using their services. Installation can be carried out independently while retaining the full 10-year warranty. Installing the compact units does not require a great deal of effort or money, and investors do not need a large plot of land either. Funding for their installation may also be obtained from the municipal office or WFOŚiGW.
When applying for funding, however, remember to begin the entire procedure before purchasing and installing the treatment plant. The fund does not provide grants for units commissioned before the application was submitted, so the customer should first contact the municipal office or WFOŚiGW to clarify the situation.
Who can build an Eko House treatment plant? “We have units using activated-sludge technology to treat wastewater from single-family homes. We also have larger treatment plants for guesthouses and holiday resorts,” explains Radosław Wojciechowski, technical adviser at Eko House Technologie Ekologiczne.
