The Legnica Special Economic Zone, Hyundai Engineering and Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation have begun cooperation related to modular microreactor (MMR) technology. LSSE:

It is intended to provide safe and environmentally friendly nuclear technology, enabling the development of future energy systems, while the lack of available energy is a common concern for investors.

The cooperation agreement was signed on Wednesday, 8 February at the LSSE Conference Centre. The company said: – “This is another step for the Legnica-based company in cooperating with and promoting firms in industries related to new technologies, the energy of the future and electromobility, particularly in terms of low- and zero-emission solutions and renewable energy sources.”

What next?

Legnica Special Economic Zone:

Following investment decisions, financing options and arrangements will be considered to ensure environmentally friendly and price-competitive supplies of electricity and heat for consumers in areas within the LSSE’s impact zone.

USNC has developed an MMR design and fully ceramic TRISO microencapsulated fuel, which does not become damaged or release radioactive substances into the environment—an distinctive feature of the company’s technology. The MMR is gas-cooled and can provide process heat at temperatures above 500 degrees Celsius, making it ideally suited for the simultaneous generation of electricity and heat. LSSE: – The company is demonstrating the MMR system at the Ontario Power Generation nuclear laboratory in Canada, as well as at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the United States and LUT University in Lappeenranta, Finland; further projects are planned, including in Europe.

According to the Polish side, this cooperation is “another step towards providing a safe, stable and emissions-free energy source for investments located in the Legnica Special Economic Zone”. Radio Wrocław, in turn, reports Radio Wrocław:

– “We want local companies to be able to use uranium energy by 2028 at the latest – this declaration was made at a meeting of American and Korean entrepreneurs in the Legnica Special Economic Zone.”
