The incident occurred on Friday, September 3, on Poznańska Street in Legnica. At around 6:00 p.m., a six-year-old boy—on private property—was attacked by a wild boar. The child was first taken to the emergency department in Legnica. However, the boy’s condition was so serious that an air ambulance helicopter transported him to a hospital in Wrocław.
The injured boy’s condition is serious.
Municipal services (the Crisis Management and Civil Defence Department in Legnica, the police, municipal police, the District Veterinary Officer, the district hunting officer and hunting clubs) responded immediately. On Saturday, Legnica Mayor Tadeusz Krzakowski convened the Crisis Management Team. – We discussed possible courses of action that could reduce the population of these animals around the city and could make the animals less likely to enter the city – said Sławomir Masojć, director of the Crisis Management and Civil Defence Department.
The municipal authorities add:
In the past, sanitary culling operations were carried out, among other measures, as well as trapping the animals and moving them to special shelters. Around 100 wild boars were captured. The related costs were covered by the Legnica City Hall. Another problem is that we are still in an ASF (African swine fever) zone, and it is not possible to move wild boars. The services also appeal to residents not to feed wild boars and to build lockable barriers around rubbish bins.
