In addition to appliances and fittings, it is also important to choose the bathroom textiles you will use to dry your body. Below, we take a close look at bathroom towels and offer advice on choosing and buying them. You will learn about the most commonly chosen and used sizes and fabrics, as well as the additional factors worth considering while shopping.
Practical and useful towels – what does that mean?
A towel is an inexpensive purchase. In any larger supermarket, you can buy one for just a few or a dozen or so zlotys. However, such a choice will not always prove suitable. Many towels are made from low-quality materials which, instead of absorbing water, will simply slide over the surface of your body. This is very irritating, especially when it comes to your morning shower, after which you want to dry yourself quickly and rush to work. So how do you choose a towel that will not be a source of frustration, but will perform its function well?
Above all, we recommend paying attention to the materials used in production. Cotton towels are the most popular, and their various advantages could be listed almost endlessly. Naturally, we advise choosing towels made entirely from natural cotton, without the addition of synthetic fabrics. These could only reduce the quality of the towel, diminishing its ability to absorb water. Cotton’s hygroscopicity is precisely its special and most useful feature.
Cotton is also highly resistant to mechanical damage, stains, detergents and repeated washing. You can wash cotton towels repeatedly at high temperatures without worrying that they will lose their original properties. It is also worth emphasizing that the type of fabric used is another good criterion when choosing towels. In this respect, we recommend terry towels, with a fairly rough surface that guarantees the highest level of water absorption.
Towel sizes, weight and finishing
In terms of size, towels can be divided into two main categories. You will find products intended for drying the whole body and hands. The former are, of course, larger – they can range from 50x100 (medium towels) to as much as 135x200 (very large towels). For drying your hands, we recommend choosing narrow towels that you can easily hang by the washbasin, on a hook.
A towel’s finishing is also important, as it affects its durability and strength. We recommend choosing towels with neatly sewn edges and additional features such as hanging loops, tabs, or even hoods to put over your head. Some models also have a small area set aside for adding a monogram or other marking.
Finally, it is also worth mentioning towel weight, or grammage. Products with a grammage of 300–400 are fairly thin: they take up less space, but will also absorb a smaller amount of water. Towels with a grammage of 500 or more are exceptionally comfortable for drying; they are, in turn, larger and heavier, but will help you dry your body quickly.
