The World Health Organization points out that banning abortion does not make abortion disappear or reduce its number. At most, it can make abortion less safe or, as in Poland, mean that ensuring access to it has fallen to the shoulders of non-governmental organizations, grassroots movements and foreign healthcare systems.
Abortion care must be safe, available on time, affordable, non-discriminatory and provided with respect.
Abortion performed in accordance with WHO recommendations, appropriate to the length of the pregnancy and with the assistance of a person equipped with the necessary information and skills is a simple and extremely safe procedure.
“For the first time in the Polish Sejm, a bill dealing exclusively with access to abortion will be considered. A debate unlike any our parliament has seen before awaits us. During the upcoming sitting of the Sejm, we are putting you to the test. Whose side are you on, MPs? On the side of women or on the side of violence against women? On the side of party interests, or on the side of the voters demanding change? Support for legal abortion up to 12 weeks has already reached 66%, so do not bury your heads in the sand and finally catch up with your electorate,” announces Wednesday’s debate Marta Lempart of the Women’s Strike.
How can you help with the campaign related to the bill on access to abortion?
Here is a list of things you can do to exert pressure and raise the visibility of our shared cause:
Send an appeal to an MP
MPs are our representatives in the Sejm. We elected them with our votes, so they represent us. They should therefore know how we want them to vote on bills that are particularly important to us!
On the aborcjanatak.pl website, you will find a sample appeal that you can send to an MP from your constituency – via Twitter or by email.
Talk to people
Just as conversations about abortion were an important part of collecting signatures for the citizens’ bill, you can now use them to raise awareness of the issue and convince people around you of how important it is to change Poland’s anti-abortion law. In this way, you strengthen social solidarity!
Share posts
We, too, appeal to MPs and monitor information concerning abortion-related issues in Poland.
Let them hear us – you can help us in a very simple way! Share our posts and react to them – let social media algorithms note that what we write about is an important issue that moves you.
This will allow us to reach more people, build awareness and exert pressure on politicians!
Paint hearts/print posters – logo to share
The symbol of our “Abortion – I’m YES!” campaign is a green heart. It is not just a popular emoji! The color green is an international symbol of the fight for the right to legal and safe abortion. The heart represents love, care and sisterhood. Let’s popularize this symbol together! Download the posters and stickers, print them and put them up in your area, or paint a green heart with chalk or spray wherever you see fit – let them see us!
Come to the Sejm
The day of the bill’s first reading will be very important for everyone who collected and submitted signatures for the bill. Let’s be together outside the Sejm then! Let’s show that we are not afraid, that there are many of us and that we will never again be silenced! Let politicians know that we are watching them closely. And we will remember how each of them votes that day on our shared bill!
