On Saturday, April 10, a dance workshop was held at Cezar club. It was led by Paweł “Gajos” Gaj from Wrocław’s Street Dance Academy. Paweł has been dancing for three and a half years. As he admits, he started late—only at the age of 21. – I wanted to become a footballer before that. I was a devoted Juventus Turin supporter. But I knew I would no longer make a career in football, he says.
One day, he came across an Usher music video. – I saw how he moved. That was when I decided that this was what I would like to do, the dancer says. The beginnings were not easy, though. – In September 2006, I enrolled in a dance school. I trained with 40 middle-school girls. They called me “wood,” he laughs.
That is now a distant past. Today, Paweł is a well-known dance instructor. He was brought to Bolesławiec by Agnieszka Nowak, founder of the dance group Never Say Never. – I took part in the first edition of Symphony of Move [warsztatów organizowanych przez Street Dance Academy – przyp. red.]. I liked Paweł’s style, Agnieszka says. – I thought that the dancers from Bolesławiec would also like to learn something new.
Paweł admits that he enjoyed working with the young people from Bolesławiec. – I am positively surprised, the SDA instructor emphasizes. – It is great that they understand that you have to invest in yourself, he adds.
What advice would he give beginner dancers? – Freestyle is very important. We turn off the television, turn on music and dance to it the way we feel. It develops the body very well, he says.
According to Agnieszka, there is a chance that an instructor from Street Dance Academy will visit Bolesławiec once a month. – I set the bar high for myself. I try to develop while also infecting others with my passion. Dance is the most important thing to me. It excites me, and I still intend to do it, the dancer says. – I want to dance at SDA. I am planning to move to Wrocław in September. But my group will not break up. I will keep coming back here with increasingly fresh ideas, she announces.
