The war in Ukraine has been ongoing for almost a month. Mainly women with children are arriving in Bolesławiec. To help them, the residents of Bolesławiec are making a tremendous financial effort. By last week, based on incomplete data, approximately 700 refugee women had been registered in the city, and this week accommodation is being organized for 250 more women. Mayor Piotr Roman is calling for solidarity beyond political divisions, but so far the government has only promised assistance; no money related to helping war refugees has yet reached the city treasury.
– We are certain that the money will arrive – says Piotr Roman. – The money will come mainly from the Lower Silesian Voivode and will constitute assistance covering part of the costs we have incurred preparing facilities to receive refugee women. And, similarly to private individuals, under the law specific funds will be due for each person (refugee – editor’s note). In our case, it will be several dozen zlotys. At present, the figures being discussed are either 70 zlotys or 40 zlotys, depending on where the person (refugee – editor’s note) is staying. And we must find another 250 places and organize accommodation for that number of refugees – the mayor adds.
