Batory Foundation:
The Batory Foundation’s 1% campaign is aimed at people who want to support efforts to build a Poland that is governed by the rule of law and just, open and tolerant, and protects the rights of all citizens.
– We are witnessing the progressing destruction of a democratic state governed by the rule of law. Many of us are experiencing growing frustration, exhaustion and helplessness. What can we do? How can we counter this? – says Ewa Kulik-Bielińska, director of the Stefan Batory Foundation. – The Foundation’s remedy is to build a strong civil society engaged in public affairs. Today, we see our role as mobilizing people for civic activity, monitoring those in power and holding them accountable for complying with the law, proposing solutions that help build a community free from hatred, based on respect for other people and appreciating the wealth of diversity. Above all, this means supporting social initiatives and organizations that protect civil rights, counter discrimination and exclusion and the degradation of the natural environment, uphold the rule of law, and defend the equal rights of all citizens.
The 1% donations collected a year ago were allocated in full by the Batory Foundation to support social organizations working to defend democracy and the rule of law, women’s rights and minority rights, protect the environment and climate, and help refugees. The organization announces: – This year’s donations will be allocated to initiatives serving to repair Polish democracy and protect human rights.
– Something breaks for each of us from time to time. We then face an important choice: repair it or buy a new one? But some things cannot be bought. Today I’ll explain how to help repair democracy in Poland in a simple way – says Maciej Stuhr in a commercial referring to the popular TV program “Do It Yourself,” hosted years ago by Adam Słodowy.
In a kind of guide to civic action, illustrated with drawings by Bartosz Minkiewicz, Maciej Stuhr shows how the destruction of democracy can be countered. – You can attend a protest. Halting some of the changes to the justice system showed that it works – he explains. – You can argue that clean air, forests and water are not “environmentalism,” but human rights.
