The incident occurred on the second day of the Christmas holidays, December 26, in the afternoon. At a body of water in Bolesławice, the ice beneath the animal gave way. The roe deer could not escape the winter trap on its own. A woman noticed the incident and notified the emergency services.

KP PSP Bolesławiec:

Wearing special suits for working in water, secured and belayed, the rescuers reached the roe deer across the surface of the body of water using ice rescue sleds. They then evacuated the roe deer to the shore. The firefighters covered the wild animal with a blanket to calm it. They subsequently transported the weakened roe deer to a wildlife rescue centre in Tomaszów Bol. Firefighters from the Rescue and Firefighting Unit in Bolesławiec and the Volunteer Fire Service in Trzebień took part in the operation.

Winter ice can be a problem not only for people. Firefighters appeal to the public to watch out for similar situations and immediately notify the emergency services. Taking action independently can be dangerous and may end tragically.
