We ask what the paid parking zone gives the city. Economically: how much does the city—and its residents—gain from it? And what does it mean socially and ecologically? The issue of paid parking in central Bolesławiec continues to provoke strong emotions and is described as a total failure (87% of votes cast in the poll of September 22, 2021).
Bolesławiec mayor Piotr Roman:
Paid Parking Zone: Residents have two benefits—they can park for free on their own street and adjacent streets, while in other parts of the city they have a lower subscription fee. We have a very small paid parking zone. From places outside the zone, one can walk to locations within the zone in five minutes. When designating the zone, we wanted to do what was best for residents. Previously, residents of the city center had nowhere to park. The zone is not yet generating a profit; for now, it has to cover its expenses. Revenue should cover the costs. Next year, we should earn several hundred thousand zlotys from the zone, perhaps even one million. Revenue from the zone will be allocated to improving road transport, developing cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, and expanding green areas.
Fire on Bielska Street: I was in the apartment where the fire occurred. It looks terrible. A major renovation will be needed. Windows in the apartments above were cracked. Residents thank God that it happened during the day and not at night. Residents of the building are already returning home. The gas supply will be reconnected soon. The woman whose apartment was affected by the fire had caused problems.
