The nationwide protests in defense of free media are being organized by the Committee for the Defence of Democracy. August 10 is an important date because the following day, the Sejm will hold a debate on “lex TVN.” Several dozen cities across Poland, including Bolesławiec, have joined the protest.
Let us recall that the bill restricting media freedom and targeting TVN was supported by Szymon Pogoda (36), of Law and Justice. The Bolesławiec MP signed the bill amending the Broadcasting Act. The bill provides that broadcasting licenses may be granted only to entities whose owner lives or has its registered office within the European Economic Area. This provision targets TVN, whose owners are American. If the law came into force, they would have to sell their shares.
TVN has repeatedly featured and promoted the city of ceramics in numerous programs. During the Ceramics Festival, TVN24 was among the outlets reporting on the events at Poland’s largest ceramics fair.
