Several days of heavy snowfall were enough for the problem of excessively burdened building roofs to return. Snowdrifts place a heavy load on a roof’s supporting structure. One square metre of snow approximately 15 cm thick can weigh around 50 kg. What is more, wet snow is heavier than light, powdery snow. Snow left on roofs can lead to tragedy. Let us recall that in 2006, snow caused the roof of a hall in Katowice to collapse. Sixty-five people died in the disaster, and more than 170 were injured.
Property owners or managers are responsible for removing snow from roofs. This is stipulated by a 2006 regulation issued by the Lower Silesian Voivode, which imposes on the owners and managers of buildings and other structures the obligation to remove accumulated snow or ice from roofs. Failure to comply with this provision may result in a fine.
