How should we prepare for it? How can we come up with a gift idea for Mum?

The key is an idea

Buying gifts for every occasion is still a challenge for many of us. Whether it is a birthday, a name day or Mother’s Day. How can we honour the most important person in our lives and make her happy? Where should we start? A gift idea for Mum, just like gifts for other occasions, does not come immediately and causes us many difficulties. According to surveys conducted on such occasions, when looking for inspiration to buy a gift, most of us ask the person concerned directly, while a large proportion seek advice from family or friends. Finally, we turn to the internet to find a suitable gift. Research indicates that, once we find the right gift, almost one-third of us buy it well before the date of the celebration. Most make their purchase a few days beforehand, while one in ten buys a gift at the last minute. Until now, we have opted to buy gifts in brick-and-mortar shops and only then used the internet; however, it can be expected that this trend has been reversed.

Regardless of the time, place or source of inspiration, when looking for a Mother’s Day gift, it is best to begin by observing or talking to the person being celebrated. We can rely on our knowledge and observations and think about what our mum needs, what would make her everyday life easier or what would bring her joy. Perhaps, during one of your many conversations, Mum mentioned that she was looking for something, dreaming about something or needed something? All we need to do, then, is listen to her needs, including those expressed directly. In the end, it is always worth taking the initiative and asking Mum about her needs ourselves.

Classic ideas

When trying to come up with a gift idea for Mum, we most often rely on popular and familiar solutions. There are gifts that are almost universal, although a closer look may reveal that not every stereotypical gift will delight a particular person. We most often decide to buy cosmetics. A pleasant fragrance is always appreciated, and it is commonly assumed that every woman will be happy to receive perfume. However, care should be taken not to give Mum a fragrance she cannot stand. Another frequent choice for Mother’s Day is household equipment, small appliances or... dietary supplements. While a new iron, vacuum cleaner or hairdryer may make Mum happy, especially if she previously told us that one of them had broken, buying supplements may provoke mixed feelings, as she might get the impression that we consider her elderly. Many of us still choose to buy clothes or small gadgets. When choosing Mother’s Day gifts, we also often opt for jewellery, electronics, books or music. Although statistically these are chosen least often, they may prove to be truly ideal and safe gifts. This is especially true of jewellery: a lovely necklace or bracelet is always in good taste.

Traditional or unconventional

When coming up with a gift idea for Mum, we can also choose something non-standard. A personalised gift, such as a day at a spa, a helicopter flight, a bungee jump or something similar, can also bring our Mum a great deal of joy. All the more so because we more often associate such activities with youth. Given to an optimistic, self-confident and energetic mum, it can bring a lot of happiness. If, however, we do not feel confident, we can also prepare a Mother’s Day gift ourselves. It is true that we have outgrown the clumsy cards painted with crayons or paints, but creating a painting, if we like to paint, or making a small figurine, if we happen to sculpt, can bring our Mum even greater satisfaction.

Regardless of the choice we make, let us remember that even if a gift seems unsuitable, our mum will certainly appreciate our intentions. After all, she is our Mum and loves us regardless of whether she receives a handmade card, a smartwatch or Coco Chanel perfume from us.
