On Monday, February 9, Civic Platform began collecting signatures for a citizens’ bill concerning a ban on the creation and distribution by public television of news and current-affairs programming, as well as the abolition of the licence fee. At the parliamentary office of Zofia Czernow, signatures can be submitted until Friday, February 12. Everyone visiting the office is asked to comply with the applicable sanitary regulations.

Rafał Trzaskowski spoke about abolishing the RTV licence fee during his election campaign, and called Public Television a factory of lies and manipulation.

“So far, we have one party’s news bulletin,” says Urszula Magryś about public television. “That is why we must declare war on vile lies and manipulation. If the ruling party complied with the broadcasting regulations, signatures would not be collected for the bill. Civic Platform will submit a citizens’ bill, and its opponents risk rejecting it. It is worth having voters see how this government treats citizens’ bills and express their dissatisfaction at the election. We cannot remain passive. The number 276 is the number of MPs needed to overturn a presidential veto, which is why Civic Platform proposed talks with the opposition about Poland’s future. All previous attempts were unsuccessful. Citizens have had enough of talk and demand specifics, including that the opposition reach an agreement. There are several projects that divide us, but many that unite us. These include abolishing the RTV licence fee and amending certain laws introducing a ban on the creation and distribution by public television of news and current-affairs programming,” explains the representative of the Civic Platform Municipal Circle in Bolesławiec.
