Arrivals, departures and transfers. When planning a holiday journey by train, it is good to know which train to board and which ticket to have. If a passenger has bought a journey on an express train, they should not change to a stopping train during the journey. This may mean having to pay an additional fare.

Why? The carriers have not signed the appropriate agreements with one another. If a mistake occurs, the overpaid money can indeed be recovered, but for the traveller this means additional trouble. The conductor issues the correct ticket for travel on a PKP Przewozy Regionalne train and writes a note stating that the PKP Intercity ticket was unused. A refund for an unused ticket may be requested at the ticket office.

Passengers who purchase the wrong ticket may encounter difficulties at the station in Bolesławiec, from which trains operated by two companies depart: PKP Przewozy Regionalne and PKP Intercity. Both offer travel on express trains, which creates additional complications.

Please note:

  • express trains on the Dresden-Wrocław Główny-Dresden route are operated by the German company DB Regio and PKP Przewozy Regionalne. In this case, a ticket for a PKP Przewozy Regionalne express train is valid; it does not entitle the passenger to travel on a PKP Intercity express train
  • express trains: “Sudety” on the Zgorzelec-Warszawa Wschodnia-Zgorzelec route and “Ślązak” on the Zgorzelec-Przemyśl-Zgorzelec route are operated by PKP Intercity. A ticket purchased for these trains is not valid on PKP Przewozy Regionalne express trains
  • PKP Intercity also operates the weekend Ex “Pogórze” on the Jelenia Góra-Warszawa Wschodnia-Jelenia Góra route. To travel on this train, passengers must purchase an express-train ticket together with a mandatory seat reservation costing PLN 15
  • on the Ex “Pogórze” train, on the Wrocław Główny-Jelenia Góra-Wrocław Główny section, the Last Minute offer is available: the flat-rate ticket price, including the seat reservation, is only PLN 23
  • all stopping trains departing from Bolesławiec are operated by PKP Przewozy Regionalne. However, additional Koleje Dolnośląskie trains depart from nearby Legnica; a separate ticket must be purchased for them (from the conductor, without an additional surcharge)
  • The Euro-Nysa ticket, which entitles its holder to unlimited travel in the Polish-Czech-German border area, is valid in Poland only on trains operated by PKP Przewozy Regionalne
  • in the Masovian Voivodeship, regional services are provided by two municipal companies: Koleje Mazowieckie and Warszawska Kolej Dojazdowa, while passenger services in Warsaw itself and its suburbs are provided by Szybka Kolej Miejska
  • in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, alongside PKP Przewozy Regionalne, passenger services are operated by PKP Szybka Kolej Miejska. The Koleje Mazowieckie “Słoneczny” train also runs through the Tricity, on the Warszawa Zachodnia-Gdynia Główna route
  • in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, regional services on non-electrified lines are operated by the Polish-British company Arriva PCC. Electrified lines are served by PKP Przewozy Regionalne
  • a new feature on Polish railway tracks is the interREGIO (IR) trains operated by PKP Przewozy Regionalne. IR trains have two significant advantages: low prices and short travel times. To travel on an interREGIO train, a ticket must be purchased under a separate fare system. A combined ticket for a stopping train and an IR train can be purchased if such a transfer is planned. The following are accepted on IR trains: the tourist ticket, REGIO Karnet, season tickets and named network tickets for travel on PKP PR trains.

To reach your destination without mishaps, you need to arm yourself with patience. New ticket agreements between carriers are not expected in the near future.
