Garden hose – construction

Depending on the owner's needs and the working pressure of the water that will be used to water our plot, we can even choose five-layer garden hoses. What does this mean, and what are these layers? They are a reinforcing element of the hose that allows it to withstand a temporary increase in the pressure of the flowing water. The more layers there are, the more difficult it is to deform the garden hose; therefore, if the water flow pressure is high, it is worth choosing a hose with more layers. In addition, the durability provided by the layers is increased by reinforcement, that is, the so-called braid.

Hoses available on the market may be covered with one of several types of such braiding. These include:

  • cross braid
  • mesh braid
  • diagonal braid.

The first of these consists of thin polyester fibers arranged crosswise, which provide excellent protection for the hose. They significantly reduce its susceptibility to deformation, but its flexibility deteriorates. Reduced flexibility of the garden hose can cause it to break if it is repeatedly bent in the same place. The second type of braid is an evenly distributed layer of symmetrical mesh that tightly wraps around the garden hose, providing it with high-quality reinforcement to protect it from premature damage. The third braid belongs to patented systems. It is excellent in terms of quality and allows hoses to be used without the risk of them becoming tangled on their own through bending and forming loops, as can happen with a standard hose with fewer layers and a cross-braid system.

Every type of garden hose should have a certificate assuring consumers of its full functionality and unquestionable quality. When buying a hose from a specialist gardening store, we are unlikely to encounter products that fail to meet our requirements. However, if we have any doubts, it is worth resolving them by speaking with the store staff, who can expertly select all the accessories we need.

Garden hose – does length matter?

Once we have chosen a specific garden hose, we need to purchase it in the appropriate length. To fit it properly to our yard, measure the distance from the water outlet to the most distant point in the yard and add approximately 3 to 5 m for possible turns and avoiding obstacles such as garden structures. The diameter is just as important as the length. The longer the garden hose, the larger its diameter should be in order to balance the pressure of the water flowing through it. It is worth consulting all the parameters with an experienced seller.
