The incident took place on July 8 last year, at night, in Zgorzelec. A conflict broke out between two neighbors. Mariusz D. came to the victim’s property. He threatened to kill him; he punched his neighbor in the face, causing a displaced nasal bone fracture.
He then ran out of the property. But after a moment, he returned with... a replica samurai sword, which he used to strike the victim’s head with great force. (Before the aggressor fled the scene, he also kicked his victim’s wife.)
Investigators:
The sword strike was blocked by the victim’s hands, causing extensive injuries to the thumbs of both hands, which were practically amputated, as well as facial injuries.
[...] thanks to advanced medical procedures and rehabilitation, it was possible to significantly restore the function of the victim’s hands; he is a surgeon by profession.
D. was arrested immediately after the incident. At the prosecutor’s request, he was placed in pretrial detention.
In October last year—by decision of the Court of Appeal in Wrocław—the detention was replaced with bail of PLN 100,000. The accused was also placed under police supervision. In addition, the man is banned from leaving the country and from contacting the victim.
Ultimately, investigators charged D. with attempted murder and causing serious bodily harm to the victim, as well as violating the bodily integrity of his wife.
The accused pleaded not guilty. He could now face life imprisonment. Prosecutor’s office:
The penalties he faces were secured against the accused’s assets by seizing vehicles belonging to him worth more than PLN 200,000.
D. had previously been convicted in Germany.
