During Wednesday’s meeting of the Bolesławiec City Council, the issue of the monument commemorating the Gross-Rosen subcamp resurfaced. Councillor Mirosław Sakowski asked what was happening with the matter. Zdzisław Abramowicz of the Bezpartyjni i Ziemia Bolesławiecka councillors’ group joined the discussion: “At present, together with the mayor and deputy mayor and the Museum director, we are trying to ensure that this monument is erected in a worthy location.

The councillor added that the municipal authorities and some councillors are in constant contact with Barbara Sawicka from the Gross-Rosen Museum. He also added: “Both the city authorities and we are trying to ensure that this monument is put on display as soon as possible.”

“The memorial significance justifies the efforts we are making,” Deputy Mayor Kornel Filipowicz noted in turn. “I assure you that the place where the monument will be erected will meet all standards of due care.”

Where exactly would the monument in question be erected?

As Z. Abramowicz explained to us, the monument is to return to Staroszkolna Street and stand on a patch of greenery within the area where the subcamp once stood. As the councillor pointed out, moving the object to a location far from the former camp would simply be illogical.

Whether this will happen, however, is not yet known. Property-ownership issues may prove problematic. The matter is expected to be clarified at the beginning of October.

We will return to this subject.

Let us recall. About two years ago, under one of our articles, a Reader suggested:

It would be better to tell the people of the Bolesławiec region what happened to the stone commemorating the Gross-Rosen concentration camp subcamp, which stood on Staroszkolna Street, because only an empty space remains where the monument stood… And just a year ago it was still there… I wonder whom it bothered. After all, the children who grow up one day will not know that something like this [tu] existed…
