All you need is an identity card to have a free cytology examination or breast mammogram. The government cancer-fighting programme has simple rules.

You should go to a centre carrying out examinations as part of the programme. Provide your PESEL number at registration. The receptionist will schedule an appointment for the patient. After the examination, the woman will be registered in the NFZ system as a person who has been examined. That is all.

Women within a specified age range can undergo both examinations:

  • Cytology: women aged 25–59
  • Mammography: women aged 50–69

Doctor Mariusz Bartkowiak, a specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics, will tell us about cytology. We will also talk to him about breast examination during a routine check-up with a gynaecologist.

Mieczysław Kubisz, head of the X-ray department and a radiological technician, will tell us about mammography.

Attention – here is a list of centres in Bolesławiec where the nationwide campaign of free cytology and mammography examinations is being carried out.

Cytology

What does the examination involve?
The doctor uses a special brush to collect cells from the cervix and transfers them to a glass slide. The sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. Any possible pathological changes are determined on its basis.

How should you prepare for the examination?
You can come for it at any time except on the days when you are menstruating.

How often should cytology be repeated?
For healthy women, this examination is recommended once a year

Mammography

What does the examination involve?
The breast is X-rayed as during an X-ray examination. The images are assessed by a doctor.

When should mammography be performed?
It should be performed in accordance with the menstrual cycle, that is, between the 4th and 10th day of the cycle. Remember: the first day of bleeding is the first day of your cycle.

How often should mammography be performed?
Women over 50 are advised to have their breasts X-rayed every two years.
