The District Court in Bolesławiec ordered the temporary detention of the 50-year-old Kazakh, responsible for the tragedy that occurred on the A18 route near Różyniec, close to Bolesławiec, on the night from Sunday to Monday. The truck driver took a wrong turn and decided to turn around at a place where there was no barrier. Three vehicles—two passenger cars and a minibus—crashed into his trailer. A fire broke out. Four people burned to death. Emergency services took six other injured people, including the truck driver, to hospital.
The Kazakh is an experienced driver. Until now, he had driven only on Kazakh and Belarusian roads. On Sunday, he was returning from his first trip to Western Europe.
He now faces up to 12 years in prison.
