There has been another presidential veto by Andrzej Duda. This time it concerns the so-called Demotion Act, under which deceased military officers who had served in the security services or had been members of the Military Council of National Salvation (WRON) were also to be demoted.
“The provisions will therefore apply, among others, to General Wojciech Jaruzelski, General Czesław Kiszczak, but also to General Mirosław Hermaszewski, the first Pole to travel into space,” “Super Express” wrote recently. (Incidentally, Mirosław Hermaszewski is the father-in-law of Law and Justice MEP and former Vice-President of the European Parliament Ryszard Czarnecki.)
As we read on the website of Wirtualna Polska:
“I was in favor of radical solutions concerning former UB and SB employees,” Duda said. “These were people who harmed Poland, (...) they embodied evil,” he stressed. He believes that the decision to demote should not be the same for everyone. He considered such a solution unfair.
The president added:
“I decided that I would not sign this act and that I would refer it for reconsideration by the Sejm; this is not an easy decision for me, because I would like these matters to be resolved; but not in this way.”
