Three companies submitted bids to dismantle the monument (as part of a request-for-quotations procedure). LPGK offered the most favorable price—approximately PLN 53,000.
The construction site will be handed over next week, on Tuesday. The dismantling itself will most likely begin on Saturday, March 24. LPGK employees have already begun preparations for the operation. On Thursday, March 15, they took measurements of the monument that are necessary to begin its removal.
– The monument will certainly disappear from the city center by March 30, says Jadwiga Zienkiewicz, deputy mayor of Legnica. – We will then be able to apply to the voivode for reimbursement of the costs incurred. The monument, together with the plaques, will first be taken to LPGK warehouses. Later, it will go to a lapidarium, which will be created by the Copper Museum. Similar memorabilia will be displayed there.
The Monument of Gratitude to the Soviet Army, designed by Józef Guzy, was unveiled in 1951. After 1990, repeated attempts were made to remove it from Słowiański Square. Guzy himself admitted years later that it was not a masterpiece and suggested burying it.
What do you think? Is this a good decision?
